"If it's a good movie, the sound could go off and the audience would still have a perfectly clear idea of what was going on." Alfred Hitchcock

Just Go See It

Just Go With It

I almost always like Jennifer Aniston films. There's something about her that is very calming and well...normal. In a totally complimentary way. I loved her in The Bounty Hunter and I have always loved her in Friends. But this Adam Sandler production was one of the funniest movies I've seen her in. Adam Sandler, for being the ridiculous funny-guy, he does a great job of playing the love interest. Like in Mr. Deeds he achieves a great combination of funny and still managing to hook the chick-flick saps....like myself. A great cast and combination of story and character development. Like all movies it had it's flaws and hitches. But overall something fun (and pretty clean) to watch on a Friday night. It's definitely an Adam Sandler movie I'm going to own.

There was no Back-up Plan...

The Back-up Plan

I actually wanted to see this movie and had planned to send for it on my Netflix. But yesterday my Mom had a free code for a Redbox and so we decided on this new Jennifer flick. It started out interestingly enough with cute beginning credits. The first scene takes place in the doctor's office where Jennifer Lopez or Zoe, as her characters name is, is being inseminated. There was a great meet-cute and then we are off into the hectic romance of Zoe and the soon-to-be baby daddy. Unfortunately because they are trying to fit a whole nine months into a one hour film it tends to feel a little rushed and there are a few things that don't really get explained. The film makers made up for it a little bit with cute/funny moments that I'm sure are true about pregnancy and relationships but there were moments that were so appalling and sometimes too over the top that it was hard to keep a straight face. The birth scene of one of the single-mothers made me more than blush and gasp. I think we had enough of those horrible birth videos in high school that we don't need the almost graphic scene in something we are meant to find enjoyment in.
Not to mention the 'sex' scene in the very beginning was just horrible to sit through with my own dear mother watching it with me. Uncomfortable to say the least.

Over all something that was entertaining to see once, probably something I will never own, and be sure to watch it with someone you are not embarrassed to watch it with. :)

Romantic Comedy In Reverse

The Baxter:

This movie is one of those hard finds. It was a random one for me. I was packing for my trip to California when I decided to watch this intriguing flick. It started out a little slow and was definitely a little slow throughout. But was worth the wait. It had that independent film feel without all the hype and weird music.
It starts at that classic moment in romantic comedies when the leading lady is about to marry the wrong guy and the right guy busts through the door to stop the marriage and works it's way backwards from there. But this movie isn't about the leading lady it's about the guy who is left at the alter. Which actually turned out to be a brilliant idea and worked remarkably well. It wasn't made great...there were some definite bumps and hiccups throughout the movie. But I would say that it fulfilled a creative need for me. It was different and even had some funny moments. I would say it's something that would live on my movie shelf.

A Modern Day Hitchcock

The Ghost Writer

A modern day Hitchcock movie. I am a huge Hitchcock/old movie fan and this movie had that same mystery, B&W, classic feel to it. From start to finish this movie held my attention. The music, the cinematography, the actors, and the whole story line, a great blend! I don't want to talk it up too much because I don't want someone to go in there expecting too much. But if you are an old movie lover you will probably love this movie too. It is a movie that relies, not on special effects but on the story, the plot. The dedicated politician, Pierce Brosnan hires a new ghost writer Ewan McGregor to help him write his autobiography, McGregor feels obvious worry after he finds out that the first ghost writer mysteriously died. A movie that will keep you guessing until the end. This is one great movie that will grace the beloved shelf of my movie collection.

Avatar...wait another "we hate America" movie? Surprise, Surprise

Avatar: A movie that, in theory, sounds great. The special features are so amazing you would think that such a crazy world did exist. However, while the special features were great, I found myself almost completely bored with the story...I couldn't help but laugh during the Avatar 'sex' scene and wanted to cry when about 20 minutes into the movie I realized that there was still 2 hours and 20 minutes to go. Now perhaps I am not the best person to review this movie, seeing as I am not a huge sci fi fan but I feel that there is something to be said for my opinion...maybe cause I am the only one who didn't think that it was AMAZING.
So even though I stand alone in my opinion of Avatar, I will still stand. Not to sound too cliche. I also believe that a lot of the way that I saw the movie has to do with the fact that people said it was so AMAZING and couldn't stop raving about it. This may have swayed my views because I went in there expecting something more than it was. This almost three hour movie left me seriously wanting...
There was some pretty good acting but it didn't make up for the OBVIOUS agenda. (Thanks Hollywood) This was a definite anti-American, 'we hate the military', 'save the planet', 'Americans killed the Indians and stole their land' flick. There was no mistaking that. My boyfriend had to tell me to shut up half the time because I kept sighing loudly when there was a dilapidated argument about how America sucks. I am SO tired of Hollywood and their agenda movies...can't we just have a fun movie to watch that has nothing to do with saving the planet or spiting on American history?
I will commend this movie for its great special effects and the strides that Cameron has made with this film, but I can't lie and say that I loved it...cause all it did was leave me feeling frustrated with how much people hate the country they are LIVING in. If you don't like America then GO SOMEWHERE ELSE! :) That's all I have to say about that... so peace!
But Avatar...good graphics...stupid, boring story.

When in Rome...and left behind.

When in Rome

When in Rome
is the overly made classic rom-com, there isn't one plot 'twist' in this boring film that we haven't seen before in the MANY rom-coms that have come before this torturous rendition. From beginning to end the movie was non stop cliches and bad acting. Actually not really the actors fault though cause the writing was HORRIBLE! Like a bad Mary-kate and Ashley flick. Time after time the male counterpart to the beautiful Kristen Bell, Josh Duhamel explained that he really loved her...but again and again she would not believe him and run away. This happened the entire film and continued to get on my nerves. "He loves you already!" I wanted to yell at the screen. Not to mention the fact that the movie started quickly and moved too quickly for the rest of it. The story left no time for character development and before we even knew what was happening he was in love with her and the rest was history...well actually the rest was just her running away from him. Watching a movie is like taking a ride through a story with these characters who you can come to love and care about. But with this movie, it was as if the characters left without the audience and we are spending the whole movie trying to catch up. This movie was a sad attempt at a good idea and it's a shame that they weren't willing to take the time to make it better. I would give this movie 1 1/2 stars and only...no thumbs up. Sorry Rome...just didn't do it for me this time.

5 Thumbs Up!

Really fast I want to explain the whole 'five thumbs up' thing... see whenever I see the ratings on movies and they have only two thumbs up (which would only make sense seeing as we only have two thumbs) I always get the stars and thumbs mixed up and feel bad for those movies cause they only have two thumbs up and not five. It's funny that I know this about myself and yet I still think this EVERY time! So it's actually part of my ratings now to give five thumbs up instead of just two.
